Chicago Dramatists

Although this group is mainly a theatre/playwrighting organization, screenwriters should also check this place out. In addition to offering a feature-length screenwriting course with instructor Dan Conway, they also hold a 10-minute Saturday workshop series. During this series, artistic directors of local theatre companies (such as Steppenwolf, Famous Door, etc.) perform 12 page scenes from theatrical works. If you're not into playwriting, adapt a screenplay scene for the stage and submit it to the series. It's a great way to get your work read aloud and performed by actors.

Founded in 1979, the nonprofit theater organization is dedicated to "cultural enrichment through new works." The group was founded as a playwrights' collective, and still fosters new plays and the development of both established and emerging dramatists, especially Chicago playwrights. After a beginning in a dance studio, they moved to the Organic Theater center in 1981, and now have their own home.
