Editorial Review of Yummy Yummy

Yummy Yummy is the perfect rainy-day antidote. Everything about this Pan-Asian spot, from its apple-green and melon walls to the huge flower bouquets on the counter, channels a cheery vibe.

The restaurant does a brisk takeout business, but all those delivery hounds are missing out on a quiet meal at one of the dining room's eight tables. Hanging lamps provide just the right amount of light, and shelves stock ceramic waving cats and other charming kitsch.

Appetizers like chicken pot stickers, crab rangoon and beef satay run from $3 to $6, while standby entree favorites such as moo shu pork, sesame chicken and curry shrimp will set you back $9 to $13. The food tastes fresh, and the portions leave more than enough for a second meal. For the health-conscious diner, the menu offers up versions of several entrees with soy gluten or seitan instead of meat for just a dollar or so more. The filling kung pao soy gluten in a spicy brown sauce delivered on taste and brimmed with chunks of zucchini, carrots and peanuts.

Wash down your noodles with one of several fruit smoothies (with or without those addictive tapioca pearls). Owner Cheryl Tam, who runs the restaurant with her brother Brian, blended my lychee smoothie herself. The end result tasted icy and sweet, came with a straw blessedly big enough to suck up every last chewy tapioca, and cost a mere $3.50.

A framed photograph on the wall shows before-and-after images of a man who lost more than 100 pounds, and it's signed, “To Cheryl, your good food helped me do this. Richard.” There's something we can all eat to.
