THIS RESTAURANT HAS CLOSED. Downtown Evanston bombards passersby with a wide array of specialty restaurants, so it's sometimes easy to forget about the humble hamburger. That's where Uber Burger comes in, and, as the name suggests, these burgers aren't the limp creations you'll find at fast-food joints. The diner lets patrons pick from three types of patties (Angus beef, turkey or veggie) to pile high with various toppings (bacon, mushrooms, cheese, etc.). It goes beyond the standard condiment spread of yellow mustard and Heinz, offering sauces like roasted garlic, green chili salsa, wasabi mayo and chipotle ketchup.
Prices are reasonable at $3.79 for a single patty, $4.89 for a double and $5.99 for a triple, the Uber Burger. A single patty makes a good-sized sandwich; it's hard to imagine the depths of hunger that would push someone to tackle the triple.
You won't miss much, save for a few screened posters of indie rock bands dotting the walls and extraneous umlauts on the menu, if you elect to go the take-out route. The restaurant's lack of smell may strike you as odd: With all the cooked-to-order, juicy, flavorful patties, it should smell like a park on the Fourth of July, not a clean kitchen.
Expect to wait a while for your meal, and pass the time by munching on huge, crispy onion rings or perfectly seasoned fries. Uber Burger also serves dessert, including a sundae made with Homer's ice cream.
