Tarts are just the beginning at Three Tarts Bakery and Cafe. French-inspired pastries and exquisitely decorated cakes are its claim to fame, but don't wait for a special occasion to experience this charming North Shore sweets shop. Owners Ann Heinz and Kate Coyne, who opened Three Tarts in 1998, keep the magic on the premises, where they make everything from scratch.
Forget convention and start with dessert (though the cakes are almost too beautiful to eat). The county fair cake (chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream) is a huge seller, and the flourless chocolate cake is super-rich, so proceed with caution and a glass of milk. And if you can't finish a cake on your own, grab a cupcake or two (or three). The decorated cookies are adorable, inventive and, most importantly, scrumptious.
You'll be mesmerized by the stunning sweets, but don't overlook the fresh salads and sandwiches. For years I've made a beeline for the oatmeal raisin cookies, but after discovering the caper tuna and mozzarella pesto sandwiches, I'll be back for lunch. Priced $3.25-$5.75, all sandwiches are served on one of about a dozen artisan breads. (And speaking of bread, word on the street is that the cinnamon apple bread makes out-of-this-world French toast.) Tomato basil soup is served daily, but be sure to make a special trip on Friday for the ever-popular white hot chili.
There are plenty of tables and an outdoor patio, so come with friends. And if you're entertaining those friend at home, place an order for a decorated cake of your choice. Check out the refrigerated section's smorgasbord of cheeses, olives and dips, too.
