Deadly arguments have broken out over where the best pizza in the city can be found. Rarely is it contested, however, that the smaller hole-in-the-walls have it down over larger, established mainstays. Tata's, a joint in Mount Greenwood, can be an exception to the rule depending on whom one talks to at any given moment. Customer service here can sometimes be some of the most brusque outside of
Wiener's Circle. But, to paraphrase the alternate universe Nick from "It's a Wonderful Life," they serve good pizza here for people who want to get full fast.
The pizza can also be hit or miss. One time it's dripping in tomato sauce, the next it's dry as a bone. What Tata's does do well is the calzone. The single-serving calzone ($5) can easily feed two and is made to order from a selection of fresh ingredients (at 50 cents each). Starch lovers can check out Tata's potato-crust pan pizza. A slice of this topped with four cheeses runs $4, with toppings costing an extra $2.50. Classic Chicago sandwich fare is also available, including Italian beef, meatball (with "red gravy"), and sausage sandwiches.
