Editorial Review of Sol del Sur

For the days you can't decide between Mexican and American fast food, stop by Sol del Sur to satisfy all cravings. This Logan Square grill is a bare-bones establishment with a walk-up order line. The food is served up quick from the kitchen and brought to your table as you munch on complimentary fried tortilla chips and the three types of salsa: mild, spicy and flaming hot.

Tortas ($4.50), essentially Mexican sandwiches, are a specialty here; they come with lettuce, beans, avocados, sour cream and tomatoes and you can choose between chicken, steak, ham, breaded steak and al pastor, or pork roasted on a vertical spit. Some highlighted platillos (main plates) are steak fajitas ($11) or chicken enchiladas ($7) served with red, green or mole sauce. The green sauce is hot enough to make your nose run, so those with mild palates beware. All main plates are served with rice and beans.

Sol del Sur's American menu offers burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads and wraps. The hot dogs run between $2.50 and $3.50, depending on whether you order the regular dog or a Polish sausage. Burgers cost $5.68 for a half-pound hamburger or $4 for a quarter-pound cheeseburger. The wrap choices are a bit more creative, with choices like chicken teriyaki, Philly steak, tuna salad and a turkey club, all costing about $8. Sol del Sur also offers a kids menu with items like peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese and chicken fingers. All kids meals, which are less than $5, are served with French fries and a drink.

While Sol del Sur's food is served hot, the higher prices and lukewarm atmosphere are not. This Logan Square grill is good for meals on the run when Taco Bell and McDonald's just won't cut it.
