This Wicker Park eatery does a lot in its small space, offering sleek, tropical decor, counter seating and personalized touches like bamboo food trays. It also does a lot with a simple menu; Skewerz (as the name implies) serves everything grilled on a stick. Choose chicken, filet mignon, salmon, shrimp, tuna, tofu or vegetables (or a combo), then decide if you want it a la carte ($1.75-$4 per skewer) or as an entree ($7.50-$12 for three to four skewers, your choice of jasmine, brown or fried rice and one condiment; sauces include red curry peanut sauce, coconut sambal and mango chili).
Add a lemongrass, mango or green iced tea, and you're looking at a somewhat pricey takeout meal, especially for the portion size. But hey, this isn't your average fast food; Skewerz prides itself on using healthy omega-rich oil for cooking and frying, and buys most of its fare from local farmers. So go ahead, order up some yucca fries with banana ketchup, or down some graham cracker-crusted sweet potato balls. It's still cheaper than a flight to Hawaii.
