Breakfast, lunch, dinner; this Argyle eatery understands that pho cravings can strike at any hour. This is why the restaurant starts doling out the brothy bowls of their signature stuff at 9 a.m.. It's during these earlier hours that Pho 888 sees the most business. A table near the cash register often seats a group of regulars who are as quick in conversation as the kitchen is with orders.
First-timers sit near the window and flip through the extensive menu with indecisive expressions. And it's easy to see why they're so perplexed; for a place that's so small, 888 has a huge amount of food to offer. Numerous variations of pho including beef, chicken and vegetable ($4-$10) make up the majority of the menu, but there are plenty of non-soupy choices as well. Take for example, twelve different kinds of banh mi. These French-style baguettes are stuffed with everything from curry goat to shredded pork skins and make for an inexpensive ($2.50-$7.95) yet exotic lunch choice.
For the lighter side of things, stick with the spring rolls. These aren't the delicate little rice-paper treats you're used to starting with at most Asian eateries. Not only are they the size of polish dogs, but these plump rolls are stuffed with mint, fresh veggies and your choice of chicken, pork, tofu or shrimp. The restaurant is also BYO and corkage fee-free.
