Editorial Review of Nha Trang

If you're craving fresh food with an array of flavors rather than a six-pack of square mini-burgers, head to Nha Trang for a Vietnamese treat.

The decor of this tiny restaurant isn’t particularly unique—crimson red walls decorated with photos of the owners' native Vietnam, '70s-era wood paneling, Asian-inspired mobiles, as well as mix-and-match dining tables and chairs. At the back of the restaurant is a small order window which the wife occasionally peeps her head from to smile, wave and watch diners devour her food.

The couple's passion for food and their impeccable customer service sets this restaurant apart from the row of Vietnamese eateries on Argyle Street. You're not just waited on, you're doted on a bit, too. One visit to Nha Trang and the owners will remember your face and greet you like family.

Prepare for the main course with delectable appetizers such as spring rolls wrapped in a delicate rice paper packed with crisp vegetables and steamed rice noodles ($2.50), garnished with sprigs of fresh cilantro and mint from the small herb garden behind the restaurant.

Soup is a meal at Nha Trang. Try the hearty Pho Tai (beef rice noodle soup) with thinly sliced cuts of beef chuck paired with rice noodles in a rich, aromatic chicken broth accented with cilantro and bean sprouts ($4.25). A squeeze of sriracha chili sauce gives this tasty dish a kick.

A generous bowl of sliced tofu curry in a savory peanut sauce on a bed of crisp salad and tender rice noodles ($4.50) is the perfect vegetarian combination of crisp and smooth textures to fill you up before you've even made a dent in the serving.

As you leave Nha Trang, notice the doorway is flanked with two statues of German Shepherds—perhaps to bring luck or success? Whatever the case, once lovers of Vietnamese food discover this under-the-radar restaurant, Nha Trang may not need the dogs anymore. Actually, you're lucking out, too, because you just scored a quick, delicious meal (appetizer included) for under eight bucks.
