Morry's Deli, a decades-old restaurant in Hyde Park, elicits passionate loyalty from those living in the area and surprise from newcomers who are initially taken aback by its dedicated fan base. Walking in to the corner shop, you're more likely to notice the stacks of Snapple and soda towering waist-high than the grill operating at the back. The brown and tan floor-tiles look like they've weathered more than a few years, and the inside seating is limited to a handful of tables and chairs (though there's a park one block south with benches aplenty). But make no mistake, it's more than convenience that draws locals to this deli on a regular basis.
For such a small deli, Morry's offers up a surprisingly large menu, including bagels and lox, omelets, sub sandwiches, hamburgers and Italian beef, with few items topping $5. Morry's is well-known for its chopped liver and onion sandwich and its triple-decker club sandwiches, which range from the classic to the creative, such as the corned beef, roast sole and chopped liver club served on black Bavarian bread.
Window signs announce the specials, which rarely change, including a hot dog with fries for $2.49 and a breakfast of two eggs, two pancakes, two sausage links or bacon and hash browns for $3.99.
