Editorial Review of Golden Cup

With names as similar as Golden Apple, Golden Nugget, Golden House and Golden Cup, breakfast locales are bound to get confused. If you can't tell them apart by name, go by the wait. Unlike many of the city's brunch spots, the Golden Cup has a relatively short wait, which has less to do with the quality of food—better-than-typical-diner-fare—than the paltry signage.

While Golden Cup waits for an awning (city hall lost the application) you'll know you're in its entryway by the snack machines stocked with skittles and framed celebrity photos, which include a female World Boxing Champion circa 1982. Once inside, the friendly owner will seat you at one of the large, aubergine booths, or opt for one of the bar stools next to the open kitchen.

As far as diners go, Golden Cup would probably rank at the top in terms of cleanliness; the white and green tiles and large front window glisten. Framed postcard paintings of Rome, Venice and Paris that line the walls and scattered hanging plants are the only attempts at a decor.

Like most diners, GC's menu overwhelms with breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert all spelled out on one seven-page menu. Beyond the standard skillets and omelets, which cost around $8 depending on the mix-ins, there are an array of homemade crepes and specialties, like the Napoleon (French toast stuffed with eggs, ham, cheese, bananas, raisins and whipped cream). Entrees ranging from salads and sandwiches to kabobs and pasta offer plenty of options for dinner and are moderately priced. Influenced by the owner's Greek heritage, feta finds its way into many of the dishes—an addition that's worth its weight in gold.
