The big red, green and white sign outside this independent pizza joint stands out in what is otherwise a pretty bleak restaurant landscape in the area surrounding California and Irving Park (unless you really love KFC/Taco Bell, Subway and 7-11). Owned by Claudia Liendo and Luis Melecio, Giorgio's whips up a darn good pie.
An upbeat, homey feeling pervades this corner parlor, thanks to creamy orange walls and cutesy pictures of chefs tossing pizza. Sit at one of the super-clean tables and sample greasy delights like fried mushrooms, mozzarella sticks and chicken wings (all under $6) or go a little lighter with a fresh Italian salad for only $4.50.
Of course, you must try the homemade pies for a true Giorgio's experience. A small (10") cheese-only pizza is a steal for $6.50, and the XXL costs only $14.50. The perfectly thick and buttery pan pizza will run a few bucks more, and the stuffed pizza (with fresh mozzarella and homemade tomato sauce) is more expensive ($11.50 for 10" with cheese only), but definitely worth the extra cash. Not sure what size you want? Check out the convenient diagram behind the counter before you order.
