The Chicago Diner is not only smoke-free, but meat-free, too. A small yet comfortable diner in the heart of Boys Town, this spot has focused on healthy living for more than 20 years. The Chicago Diner is an oasis for health-conscious vegetarians and vegans who still crave their former diet of hotdogs, steak sandwiches and chicken fajitas. Yes, all three items are on the menu, just modified a bit.
Sample the "Not Dog" for a realistic wiener, the "No Meata Fajitas" or the Philly "Steak" Sandwich, made with seitan. It's unbelievable what Chef Jo Kaucher (an all-star in the vegetarian community) can create with a little seitan, tofu and spice. Even meat-lovers will be fooled. Top off a healthy meal with a natural soda, fresh juice or fruit smoothie from the juice bar.
The weekend brunch proves that vegan food doesn't equal calorie-free meals of carrots and twigs, with specials like hearty pancakes topped with warm strawberry sauce. And speaking of sauce, you can get some here, in the form of organic wines, beers and vodka-lemonades. A back patio makes summertime seating a dream, and eases up on the very-frequent wait.
