Legend has it that Carnitas Uruapan is the first (and oldest) carnitas restaurant in Chicago. That might have to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. But if you're looking for authentic Mexican-style stewed pork, few places do it better than Uruapan. There isn't much room to maneuver once you walk in—the place is designed for takeout—but the walls are adorned with pig tchotchkes and other tributes to the animal that pays the bills here. For those who want to dine in, there are a few tables set for that purpose; don't expect Frontera-style service, but this family-owned restaurant will tend to your every need.

The carnitas here is as good as customers claim. Tender and seasoned perfectly, served with a steaming-hot side of tortillas, all restaurants worthy of calling themselves carnitas joints should strive to serve it the way Uruapan does. The chicharones (pig skins) are impeccably fried and ready for liberal doses of hot sauce and salsa. Other menu items of note at Uruapan are the nopales salad and lean pork tacos. If your craving for carnitas hasn't been sated, take some to go at $7 a pound.
