It's safe to say that few cities in America can match Chicago when it comes to meat consumption. From our slaughterhouse beginnings, the city has had staples like Armour and Vienna Beef – but where does the burger fit in? In a city filled with food tradition, where is the gold standard of burger-dom?
Boston Blackie's certainly makes a good case for itself – with a half-pound of beef on a bun that spreads over most of your plate, the $7 burgers have heft. Their signature burger has a decent heap of grilled onions and bacon to satisfy your taste buds at the expense of your arteries. A patty melt on rye offers a decent alternative, or those who wish to steer clear of steer can order their "broasted" (braised and roasted) chicken sandwiches, including buffalo or Carson's BBQ. But your best bet is to stick to the real deal – a good Chicago burger should not be overlooked.
This location adds a few extras to the menu – in addition to standards like the $6 hot dog bites, Blackies also offers an $8 plate of shrimp du jonge – the breaded shrimp are plump and soaking in garlic butter (which is almost worth the price alone as a dip for your fries).
A small list of beers has some good matches for the fare, including Ebel Weiss and Blue Moon. Or take a seat at the bar – with the long, thin room and the family-friendly vibe, you might have to wait to give your burger judgment.
