At their new Rogers Park location, the Middle Eastern-flavored Alhambra Cafe serves up the usual delicious eats. An independently owned and operated coffeehouse/cafe, this joint is a true-to-the-core mom-and-pop place—something that's becoming harder to find as Starbucks takes over street corners in most neighborhoods.
Named after the Alhambra Palace built in 14th Century southern Spain, the ornate furniture and fancy gold-encrusted objects makes this place live up to their name.
With a patio rife with plastic beige and maroon chairs interspersed with a green table and many silver ones right next to a grass-filled outdoor area, it's hard to say no to outdoor eating. Inside, patrons can enjoy free WiFi, a nice view of the gold-encrusted Rancilio espresso machine, handsome wooden tables and patterned fabric-covered chairs all in a periwinkle blue room. Violins are propped up on the wall and wood floors provide a nice compliment to the handsome interior space.
On the menu, expect falafel sandwiches, grape leaves, Greek salads filled with feta cheese and tasty greens, and lots of hummus. Service isn't rushed, but it's timely. Cafe drinks are the way to go here, especially cappuccinos and lattes.
Live music on the weekend, but beware the place is closed Fridays, which is strange for a centrally located cafe in a nice neighborhood.
