Chicagoans hankering for brunch fare know that it's no easy feat finding a place that doesn't have a line stockpiled out the door. Fortunately there are a few spots that haven't yet gained this cult following. Take Alexander's, for one. Hearty (or perhaps "heart attack in waiting") is the first thing that comes to mind when meandering through the restaurant's seemingly endless breakfast selections. The small, narrow diner has more choices on its menu than the L has passengers during rush hour. Surely there's something here to suit the pickiest palate. Just keep in mind we're dealing with diner food here.
Breakfast is this restaurant's claim to fame, with 10 heaping skillets ranging from the hunger-stealing gypsy to the southern inspired Texan. There's even a Ladies' Skillet with piles of veggies and a smattering of chicken for protein. But any serious gal can whip up that simple stuff in her own kitchen, so leave the calorie-counting for those domestic days. Opt instead for the La Bamba (rampant with chorizo and jalapeno peppers) or indulge in the toothsome steak skillet served with loads of cheese and veggies. Other breakfast choices include the obvious staples like omelets, buttermilk pancakes, French toast, Belgian waffles and crepes.
