Picture this: seven-foot-tall Sears Tower replicas made of wood, a fake Statue of Liberty with Devon Street as the backdrop, a scantily clad mermaid and a rickety lighthouse. No, it’s not the set of the new "Aquaman: Chicago" flick. All these landmarks—and more—are at this now-vintage recreation area in Lincolnwood, just outside the city limits. With two totally kitschy 18-hole mini-golf courses, a bevy of batting cages with slow, medium and "major league" speeds, a dingy arcade room, an authentic photo booth and a greasy hot dog joint, the Bunny Hutch Restaurant, Novelty Golf makes a trip out to L-Wood a lot more appealing—and affordable. Even on weekend nights, mini-golf games don't cost over $8.50 for adults.
On the fake, fading green grass of these courses, many a mini-golfer whacks the ground in frustration; the holes here are as challenging as they are ridiculous-looking. Want a tip? The cheesier the golf hole structures (like the bright yellow and red payphone), the easier the strokes. Easy-looking ones that have only green grass and a slight bump will send most golfers way over par.
The trek through this course is tiring, and don't be surprised if the group of obnoxious teenagers behind you causes some shaky putts. (It's hard to play it cool when someone is waiting angrily behind you.) At the end of the course, each player has a chance to win a free game by playing a jenky pinball game that involves shooting the golf ball into a hole. Only a lucky few win, so don't cry if you still have to pay.
