Mwata Bowden

Having moved to the Windy City at the age of 10, Tennessee native and multi-instrumentalist Mwata Bowden has his roots in Chicago’s jazz history. As a member of the AACM, Bowden helped establish Tatsu Aoki’s Miyumi Project, which fuses and blends American jazz with taiko (Japanese-style drumming) and various ethnic styles. After training under legendary local instructor Walter Dyett and clocking in his time as a riveting multi-instrumentalist (saxaphone, clarinet, flute, didgeridoo, zamada), Bowden is now the director of jazz ensembles at the University of Chicago.

In the past, Bowden has performed, toured and recorded with an eclectic mix of high-profile musicians, including the AACM Big Band, Muhal Richard Abrams, Douglas Ewart, the Chi-Lites and the Miyumi Project. In addition to his duties at the university, Bowden leads jazz groups Sound Spectrum and Tri-tone and his own Black Classical Music Ensemble. The artist has also been noted for his role in Edward Wilkerson’s avant-garde jazz ensemble, 8 Bold Souls, which released an album in 2000 on far-reaching Chicago label Thrill Jockey.
