Larry Gray

One of the finest living jazz bassists has been the Chicago standard for two decades. He's played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and nearly every touring jazz dignitary, especially at Joe Segal's, where he was the longtime house bassist. Gray, who switched from guitar to his present instrument at an unusually advanced age -- 20 -- has fantastic solo technique, but -- even more importantly, has a great sense of musical balance, whether the music be pre-bop or post-fusion.

He frequently plays with pianist Willie Pickens. You can hear them collaborating on Pickens' surprisingly good 1998 Yuletide album, A Jazz Christmas.
