Ho Chung Yeh

A winner at the First Neeme Järvi Master Course/Conducting Competition in Estonia, Mr. Yeh shared the podium with Maestro Järvi at the final concert of the David Oistrakh Festival in 2000. One of the most exciting young conductors today, Mr. Yeh frequently guest conducts around the world, appearing with such orchestras as the Petrozavodsk Philharmonic, Kharkov Philharmonic, Sochi Chamber Orchestra, Evanston Symphony Orchestra, as well as a debut concert with the Saint Petersburg Radio Symphony Orchestra, Russia, in 2000. In December 2001, he was invited by the Novosibirsk Philharmonic, one of the Top Ten European Orchestras, to conduct two performances of Handel’s Messiah in the Fourth International Christmas Festival for the Arts, working with Novosibirsk Philharmonic’s Kamerata, as well as soloists and choirs from Germany, England, Lithuania and Russia. The performances were heralded as the “Event of the Year”. In 2003, he was the first conductor to be featured in the “Young Maestro Series” with the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. The performance was one of a few that were featured in the “Performing Arts Yearbook ROC 2003”; Maestro Yeh was praised as the preeminent conductor of the year. After opening the Beethoven Symphony Series, on tour with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra in February 2004, he was immediately reengaged for the International String Music Festival and a series of concerts in August 2004, on which, by personal invitation of Maestro Yeh, three principal string players from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra were presented in Taiwan for the first time. In April 2004, Maestro Yeh successfully conducted six performances of the Musical “Damn Yankees” on very short notice. In October 2005, to commemorate the Sixtieth Anniversary of the end of World War II, Maestro Yeh will conduct a concert at Orchestra Hall, home of the Chicago Symphony, featuring the celebrated “Yellow River Cantata”. The choir will be comprised of more than 200 Chinese singers selected from the US and Canada. Deeply impressed by his talent, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Daniel Barenboim invited Mr. Yeh to conduct part of his rehearsal and personally appointed him as an Apprentice Conductor in 1999. During his apprenticeship, Maestro Yeh attended rehearsals, concerts, and worked closely with distinguished soloists and maestros such as Barenboim, Boulez, Dutoit, Chailly, Temirkanov and Zukerman.

Known for his entrepreneurial abilities, Maestro Yeh is both a creative conductor and an accomplished orchestra builder. He has a true passion in developing new possibilities. In 2001, Maestro Yeh formed the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest Chamber Orchestra, for which he is Music Director. After its debut concert, he was invited to conduct the orchestra at the Oak Park Centennial Gala concert to celebrate the city’s 100-year anniversary. He also initiated and designed the North Shore Chamber Orchestra Summer Music Festival, which included chamber and orchestral concerts, as well as educational programs. In 1991, Maestro Yeh founded the Country Melody Orchestra, Taiwan, and has since served as its President and Music Director. Collaborating with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra in 2004, he helped designing and organizing the International String Music Festival. Served as the principal conductor of the Sochi Symphony Orchestra, Russia, for two years, currently he is the Music Director of the West Suburban Youth Orchestra, Associate Conductor of the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest, a Board member of the Illinois Council of Orchestras, and Music Advisory Board of the Chinese Fine Arts Society.

Maestro Yeh studied in Taiwan, the United States, and Russia, earning a DMA in conducting. He has studied with such esteemed conductors and teachers as the legendary Ilya Musin, as well as Alexander Polishchuk at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Russia, Daniel Barenboim, Neeme Järvi, John Nelson, Larry Rachleff and Harold Farberman. Before turning to conducting, Maestro Yeh earned a distinguished reputation as a flutist and musicologist, winning numerous flute and composition competitions and writing an award-winning master’s thesis. Maestro Yeh is an active promoter of the arts, appearing in numerous newspaper articles, radio and TV programs in Chicago and abroad. A strong advocate of music education, he maintains a busy schedule of community outreach, speaking at schools, music camps and conferences, conducting college and youth orchestras, and making community appearances.

Maestro Yeh's life experiences have sensitized him to different cultural orientations, a facet helpful both on and off the podium. Whether expounding on the virtues of music to children or mesmerizing audiences with his eloquent interpretations, Ho Chung Yeh is truly “A Man for All Seasons”.
