| Dave Flippo presently brings his diverse background to three very different bands. For the past three years, he has been developing his talents as a jazz vocalist/pianist and has written a small body of originals that span traditional and modern styles. His new group, Da Duo Di Flippo De Santo, includes bassist Donn De Santo and plays regularly at Pops Highwood. They presents original arrangements of standard jazz tunes with lots of modern tunes by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Lennon & McCartney and Sting. Add to this some fun stuff like "Spiderman," "If I Only Had a Brain" or "The Jets Song" and you have an idea of a typical performance.
Flippo still performs at festivals and concert series with his world fusion quintet Flippomusic, which has produced two cd's with Southport Records. Dave has also been the pianist with Pong Unit for the past five years. This quartet appears with slam poet-originator Marc Smith at the Green Mill the first Sunday of each month (call first) and plays the most eclectic show in the city. That's a mouthful, but you see the band creates on the spot any style of music for guest poets. We've done tons of blues, jazz and rock tunes, but also get request like "crazy carnival music, arabic hip-hop, bluegrass, avant garde schitzo music, pygmy music etc..." It's both very challenging and a real blast.
Flippo's background includes a Doctorate in Music Composition from the University of Michigan, a Master of Music from Eastman and jazz studies with Alan Swain and Cliff Colnot. He teaches at the Swain Studios and at the College of Lake County, in Grayslake, IL.
