Beach Boy Wilson and his wife have moved from California to the not-so-sunny Chicago area (St. Charles) and have put together a home studio. The result, his third solo album, Imagination, came out on Giant Records in June, 1998 -- a throwback to his Pet Sounds era. It features songs with as many as 64 layered vocal tracks and collaborations with Beach Boy Joe Thomas, Carole Bayer Sager, J.D. Souther, and Jimmy Buffet. About a month earlier, Wilson played his first ever solo show before at the St. Charles' Norris Cultural Center. Wilson was one of the twentieth century's most pioneering musicians. A 3-CD retrospective of his landmark album Pet Sounds (The Pet Sounds Sessions) actually was nominated for a Grammy this year! "If you're not a fan of Brian Wilson, you're not a fan of music," says Musician magazine.
Leader of the Hall of Fame-inducted Beach Boys, the California-born Wilson was one of three brothers in the band. He wrote the music, orchestrated the harmonies and produced the recording sessions during the band's "golden era" (1962-65) during which they charted several top 40 hit singles. Take a listen to the box set Pet Sounds, voted the "greatest rock'n'roll album of all time" by the editors of MOJO magazine in August 1995.
Despite Wilson's drug problems and a slew of litigations, the Beach Boys have continued to perform and record off-and-on through the present day. Wilson has put out a new solo album, and his daughters, Carnie and Wendy, formally of pop sensation Wilson Phillips, were joined by dad on their own album, The Wilsons.
