Editorial Review of McDunna's

Some may argue that McDunna's revamped look obscures any interesting quirks that might have been left of the former space. The friendly pub has already dropped "hoghead" from its title, cleared the walls of the formerly kitschy newspaper clippings and begun billing itself as an "upscale neighborhood bar." If convenience and comfort overrule your taste for quirky watering holes, though, you might want to stop by for a beer and get to know your neighbors.

Thanks to a somewhat off-the-radar location, the crowd at McDunna's skews a bit older than its DePaul-area counterparts, with loyal neighborhood regulars making up a large chunk. On a Saturday afternoon, the bar may appear spacious, but rest assured the space fills up fast. Standard bar fare like burgers and fries fill the menu, and the music ranges from pop hits to roots rock to the musical impulses of patrons at the jukebox's helm.

While originality is not its strong suit, McDunna's does have a comfortable vibe and accommodating bartenders; it could easily be categorized as a predictable, no-stress meet-up spot for friends, and it seems as though regulars consider the bar as something of a backyard extension. Its Wednesday night comedy open mic (with $2 PBR drafts!), live music a few nights per week on its revamped stage and activities such as beanbag tournaments, give a little community-outreach character to the establishment.
