Editorial Review of Patel Brothers

Patel's huge inventory of bulk items

What started out as a family-owned grocery store in 1974 has expanded into an Indian food empire. Since the Patel brothers opened their original Devon location, they have expanded to more than 30 grocery stores around the nation and began their signature packaged food line called Swad.

Living up to its tagline, "Celebrating our food…our culture," Patel Brothers offers nearly every ingredient crucial to Indian cooking (and even some that are superfluous). There are three isles full of grains, barrels of bulk Indian snacks for just $2.99 a pound, packaged spices and more chutneys (green chili, mint, coriander, coconut, samosa, kebab…) and pickles (lime, mango, garlic, carrot…) than most Westerners ever knew existed.

According to co-owner Mafat Patel, 90 percent of Patel Brothers' goods are imported from India or Pakistan, with the remaining share comprised of American goods that are still useful in Indian cooking. Feel free to ask the helpful staff about the ingredients that you'll need to prepare certain dishes.
