And...take three. McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon has bravely moved into a seemingly doomed Gold Coast space: the State Parkway spot formerly known as New York Lounge, known before that as Dragonfly Mandarin. Originally opened in NYC in 1977, the McFadden's Chicago opening marks the Irish restaurant's sixth location. A bit of New York tavern came west with the Celtic crew, and pushing past McFadden's glass doors with land you in a sea of mahogany, exposed brick, chrome fixtures, fireplaces and banquet seating. Nine plasma-screen TVs feed the sporty folk with live satellite broadcasts (both college and professional as well as East and West Coast games are shown).
At the back of the space, a cozy "den" with a 75-person capacity serves as a VIP area for bottle service. Although McFadden's is mostly a place to party (and the 4 a.m. liquor license allows Gold Coasters to do so into the wee hours), a full menu offers affordable pub fare to those craving wings, onion rings, burgers or fried calamari. More serious menu readers can opt for the herb-encrusted salmon or the warm goat cheese and portabella, and if you've taken the Irish theme to heart, shepherd's pie will round out your evening with plenty of potatoes.
