Editorial Review of Map Room

A rare find that's as good for starting your day as for ending it, Map Room is an early-hours coffee shop that morphs into a tavern as the hour grows later. The neighborhood-sophisticate vibe remains whether patrons are sipping java or suds, with free wi-fi and a bookcase full of travel lit to please inquisitive types.

The smart, map-themed decor and cozy interior make you feel like Indy Jones might hunker down beside you at any second and start talking treasure. Look for the real jewels, however, on the beer list, which offers more than 100 selections from around the globe in a collection that rivals the Hopleaf's.

If you're not sure what to get, enroll in a session of Map Room's famed Beer School, where $15 (buy your ticket early) will get you plenty of tastes and an impressive education led by local brew-master Greg Browne. Other events include Wine School sessions and regular Tuesday International Nights featuring themed catering by local restaurants (such as Minnie's, Balkan Restaurant and Bricks Chicago Pizza) or in-house chef Larry Tucker. The food comes free with a two drink minimum. Look for weekly specials like $5 High Life on Saturdays, $5 Bloody Marys on Sundays and discounted Belgians paired with free meats and cheeses on Mondays.
