Cartography fanatics and quoters of Shakespeare be warned: despite its leading name and the golden orbs that grace its facade, the
Hotel Orrington's Globe Cafe and Bar is just a good-ol' upscale diner where travelers and passersby can loosen their ties. With its brown and white honeycomb-tiled floor, mustard colored walls and brown booths, the cafe does have an earthy feel, but that’s where any worldly comparisons end. A spattered silverware collection is framed on the wall and faux-skylights illuminate a cluster of brown daisies. If the color scheme isn't exactly eye-catching, the Globe's eight flat-screen TVs and its outdoor patio do the trick.
The menu offers comfort foods like meatloaf and a half-rack of 12-hour-marinated "Redhead Ribs" ($14.95), as well as vegetarian options and big salads. The $10 beer-and-burger special is popular, as is the $14.95 Sunday buffet from 8 a.m.-noon. The more lively part of the Globe is the den, its conjoined, cafe-like side room. An exposed- brick wall peeks around the corner from the sterile dining area, giving the place a bit of needed edge. Its opposite wall is collaged with ripped images from magazines and clippings from newspapers (both of which are stuffed in cubby holes for browsing). The brown leather armchairs that sprout next to the windows are cozy places to sip any number of beverages from the Globe's full alcoholic and coffee bars. Try the Orrington coffee, a cappuccino with Godiva liquor ($7), or any of the daily drink specials (including half-price bottles of wine with entree purchase every Tuesday and Wednesday). If you're feeling extra jittery, pull open any of the five thin drawers from the den's small end table and find checker and backgammon boards, decks of cards and peg games. Or log onto the free wi-fi.
