Editorial Review of Bernice's Tavern

photo: Jen Hazen
To escape the air-kissing VIP bar scene, head to Bernice's Tavern in Bridgeport for hospitality beyond compare and a few shots of Jameson on the rocks. Family-owned and run since 1965, this unpretentious bar takes in all kinds. Neighborhood locals couldn't care less who walks in the door, while the artist clientele, which has upsurged in recent years, tends to inquisitively once-over newcomers.

Bernice's decor epitomizes straight-up hometown tavern. Just ring the buzzer and you're invited into the dimly lit, narrow space outfitted in black vinyl-covered barstools and emerald-color Formica tables. Bernice's lattice-covered walls showcase collectibles like Christmas lights draped over mounted antique toys, glass-encased figurines and plastic ponies.

Loners with no time for chit-chat can drink a cold beer while watching one of three mounted TVs behind the bar or playing the computerized card game, which sits next to the jukebox stocked with The Misfits, retro ‘80s tunes and pop/rock classics. Open-mic nights take place every Thursday, and the occasional DJ stops in.

The gracious hospitality and kindness of Bernices' owners foster fiercely loyal patrons. We ordered four rounds of drinks yet paid for two, compliments of our bartender. He even hung out at our table and chatted. “I'm gonna make this your favorite bar,” he told us. And he did.
