The "Mile of Murals" on Hubbard Street between Ogden and Desplaines Avenues, which can be seen from the Metra, were originally painted in 1971 by the West Town Community Youth Art Center, with additions by city galleries and art centers into 1976. When the railroad decided to replace an embankment in 2002, several panels were destroyed. Thankfully a rotating group of artists, the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Illinois Art Council banded together to replace these murals.
Every year since 2002, artists have been submitting images to an appointed committee who then picks 10 images to be added to the murals that summer. The 2005 group of artists to work on the murals included Christina Body, Monica Brown, Meridee Hodges, Chris Jones, Vesna Lezar and Neil Shapiro.
